For those of us who don't have the luxury of a garage, storage room or bike room, hope is not lost. If you ride a bike, you'll need somewhere to store it. This bicycle storage option requires a little further planning, but the end result will save you time, space and will keep your bike safe and sound.
Why you need a bike shed
Bike sheds are an excellent choice for those who don't want to store their bikes indoors and who need a safe and convenient way to organise their bikes. This is also a great option for those who may not clean their bikes as regularly as they'd like, prefer to keep the dirt out of their house or for growing families with multiple bikes.
Where to find a bike shed
Don't already have a backyard shed or storage room? You might be surprised to know that many hardware stores sell bike sheds and equipment. Once you've decided to go with a bike shed, have a look at your outdoor space and decide where you'll put it. Then consider the number of bikes you want to store. If you use a Steadyrack bike rack in your shed, you can store your bikes vertically as close as 350mm apart in a staggered height pattern or 600mm apart if you places them side-by-side. This means that if you need to store four bikes, you'll need enough space to ensure you can get them in and out.
Choosing the right bike shed
The size of the shed you choose will depend on how many bikes you want to store in it. A couple quick calculations should give you your answer, however it's a good idea to choose the
600mm spacing installation method if you have heavy bikes. This is because when the Steadyrack bike racks are installed at the right height, there's no need to lift your bike onto the rack - simply push and roll your bike in (handy for eBikes and heavy mountain bikes).
For four bikes, a shed with at least 2.4m of wall length would be ideal if you plan to space your bikes 600mm apart.
Can't find the right bike shed size?
If you're up for the challenge or feel comfortable in your own abilities, then you may want to consider building your own bike shed. Your hardware store will be able to assist you with this process and choosing the right materials. If you've decided that a bike shed may not be the best option for your space, you always have the option of installing Steadyrack bike racks on the side of your house, wall or other structure in and around your home.
